Spezia & Carrara Cruise Terminal: First Cruise Terminal in Italy to Publish a Sustainability Report

La Spezia, November 2024 – Spezia & Carrara Cruise Terminal (SCCT) has released its first Sustainability Report, setting a precedent as the first cruise terminal in Italy to take this significant step.
“The cruise industry—and SCCT in particular, given its close ties to local communities and the public opinion in the port cities where it operates—is fully aware of the need to act and invest to make its activities increasingly sustainable. This means committing to making processes more environmentally compatible, ethical, and respectful of local communities. For these reasons, SCCT is determined to play its part in collaboration with cruise lines, the Port System Authority, institutions, and all stakeholders to create cities that are more beautiful, livable, and attractive to young people—offering opportunities for cultural and professional growth—and to older generations, as serene places to age.” said General Manager Ciulli.
Founded in 2019, SCCT is a dynamic company steadily gaining prominence in the cruise sector of the Eastern Ligurian Sea. The year 2023 marked a significant milestone for the company, with over 725,000 passengers and 211 ship calls at the Ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara. This achievement highlights the quality of the infrastructure at Molo Garibaldi, Largo Fiorillo Cruise Terminal, and the Apuan port facilities, as well as the excellence of services provided to cruise lines and passengers.
The Sustainability Report, which covers the 2023 fiscal year, was developed with input from over 100 stakeholders, including institutions, suppliers, clients, employees, and industry associations. It showcases SCCT’s economic, environmental, and social achievements and outlines a development path aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
Aware that meaningful and lasting change requires collective effort, SCCT has structured a Sustainability Plan based on specific targets, objectives, and monitoring tools.
Key Areas of Focus:
- Social Sphere: Employee training programs, scholarships for deserving students, and measures to support work-life balance and family-friendly policies.
- Environmental Sphere: Initiatives to reduce emissions, promote public transportation incentives for employees, and contribute to reforestation projects.
- Governance: Actions focused on legal compliance, transparency, and fostering partnerships with local suppliers.
“This has been a months-long effort, starting with training sessions for staff who were approaching these topics for the first time, and then developed internally with contributions from all company departments. The result fills us with pride and serves as a concrete motivation to further improve our reporting and the goals we have set,” said Irene Palma, CFO at SCCT.
Despite being a small-scale enterprise, SCCT aims for solid and sustainable growth, guided by principles of social responsibility. The company is forward-looking, striving to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the local community and recognizing the importance of building meaningful and long-lasting relationships within its territory.
